About Dr Hassen

A kidney specialist who tailors care to each patient's choices.

Dr Muhammed Hassen is a nephrologist with experience in the management of patients on haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, as well as those fortunate to have received a kidney transplant.

He completed his medical degree at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2009 and trained in internal medicine at Tygerberg Hospital. He was admitted as a Fellow of the College of Physicians of South Africa and attained a Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine at Stellenbosch University. A two-year nephrology fellowship at Tygerberg followed, completing his Certificate in Nephrology and a Master of Philosophy in Nephrology in 2019, the latter with distinction. He then spent three months in the renal unit at Letterkenny University Hospital in Ireland before opening his practice.

Dr Hassen values the autonomy of his patients and tailors his management around their decisions, drawing on his knowledge of the many treatment options available for people with kidney disease.

Your Visit

How care with a nephrologist works

Most kidney disease causes no symptoms and is picked up incidentally on a blood or urine test. Not every result needs a specialist, so your GP is a helpful first step.

1

Results or referral

An abnormal blood or urine test, often found by your GP, is the usual starting point.

2

Diagnose

Identify the kidney disease and its cause, using tests such as urine microscopy, blood pressure monitoring and ultrasound.

3

Treat & protect

Treat the cause, prevent the disease from progressing and manage the complications it brings.

4

Ongoing care

Adjust medicines affected by kidney function and plan treatment together with you.

Most kidney diseases cause no symptoms and are detected incidentally after a blood or urine test. Not all kidney diseases are serious enough to need a nephrologist, so a consultation with your general practitioner is a helpful first step.
